We have highlighted many research backed benefits of beets. As per data from US Department of Agriculture beetroots are high in nutritional value supporting many intense physical activities.
However, pregnancy is completely different and highly complex condition. One needs to be extraordinarily cautious about nutrient intake during pregnancy.
Are Beets Good During Pregnancy?
Beets are generally safe for consumption during pregnancy. In fact, there are some important benefits for having beets in salad.
Keep you regular
Pregnancy causes huge hormonal imbalance resulting in digestion disruption, as per study. High fiber content in beets may help relieve symptoms of constipation by maintaining regular frequency.
A cup of beets contains 4-5 gram of fiber which is nearly 14% of daily recommended consumption.
May help prevent neural tube defects
Certain issues, such as anencephaly and spina bifida, may develop during embryo development. Adequate folate content in beets helps prevent such conditions.
According to CDC (US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention), a woman requires 400 mcg folic acid if pregnancy is normal. The folate consumption may be higher if pregnancy is high-risk.
It is recommended to take folic acid from variety of diet (such as prenatal vitamin) rather than just from beets. Taking daily requirement of folic acid from beets only may spike folate level.
May help with anemia
Beets are highly rich in iron. Deficiency of iron may cause anemia leading to weakness and fatigue. It is recommended to consume 40-50 mg daily to maintain iron level during pregnancy.
