Making Shilajit Resin

Making of Shilajit Resin

In previous post we discussed about authenticity test of shilajit resin. Shilajit resin gets formed between Himalaya rock crevice. The process of formation takes many centuries. Decomposition of plants, over the centuries, turns in nutrient-rich, black tar like substance. Shilajit resin is first harvested and treated with water to remove impurities and then heated with (either cow milk or triphala) to form thick paste.

Key Steps of Formation

  • Natural Formation: Decaying of plants by microbes and bacteria for centuries forms raw shilajit resin. Decay of some plants (Euphorbia royleana) produces high grade raw shilajit resin.
  • Extraction: During summer, snow melts at high-altitude rocky regions (1,000–5,000 meters). Raw and hardened resin is extracted.

Commercial Production of Shilajit Resin

  • Purification (Shodhana): Shilajit resin Shodhana is an Ayurvedic purification process that removes physical impurities such sand, dirt and toxins (heavy metals) from raw shilajit using herbs like Triphala, or liquids like cow’s milk.
    • Filtering: Raw shilajit resin is dissolved in water to separate it from impurities.
    • Heating: The mixture is heated to remove excess water, transforming it into a thick paste.
    • Ayurvedic Processing: It is often treated with Triphala or cow’s milk to enhance its potency and purity.

Raw, unprocessed shilajit often contains impurities and contaminants, making the purification process critical for safe consumption.
