Moringa Tree and Its Types

Moringa (also commonly referred to as drumstick tree) has been categorized in 13 species. Among them, Moringa Oleifera is most popular, nutrients rich and with multiple therapeutic benefits, hence widely cultivated across the world. Varieties that are less in nutrients value yet cultivated are PKM-1, PKM-2 and ODC-3 for the reasons of high-yield, rapid growth cycle and its perennial nature.

  • Moringa oleifera:Also referred to as ‘miracle tree’ and ‘tree of life’ is native to indo-pacific especially India. All parts of three are being used for various purposes. Leaves for nutritional supplement and pods for cooking.
  • Moringa stenopetala:This moringa type is native to African continent primarily to Kenya and Ethiopia. Because of its drought-resistant ability it is less nutrional. This moringa type has larger leaves and pods as compare to Oleifera.
  • Moringa peregrina:This type is native to Africa and Red Sea. It may have some medicinal uses and is primarily used for water purification.
  • Moringa drouhardii:Native to Madagascar, this type is visually very this and bulb shaped trunk. Benefits are unknown.
  • Moringa hildebrandtii:This type is also native to Madagascar. It is mostly used for edible leaves.
  • Moringa ovalifolia: Known as the Ghost Tree, found in Namibia. This type is native to Namibia and is locally referred to as Ghost Tree.
